(re)start tiny

In 2009 I knew I needed a change of role and perspective at work, but not what exactly that need pointed to. I found a lot of inspiration in Tama Kieves, who among other things was incredibly, deliciously great at saying wise things in few words. I am… not.

So I attended a workshop weekend with her in Rhinebeck, New York. That workshop led me down a path of new work – both working for someone else a role that would adapt and grow over the next several years and working “for myself”* facilitating collaboration and teaching Scrum practices to non-profits and others who served the greater good.

I started making little illustrations of her ideas, which carried on for many weeks. This illustration was, appropriately, the first. The start. TINY, obviously. Made tinier by the rapid gains in screen resolution since then.

Tama has a habit of repeating things, cementing them in your memory.

The smallest steps can be the most profound, yeah? That first time you try making a new art you’ve always liked looking at. The first article or book you read in about some industry or technology that piques your interest. That one conversation with an old friend. That empty building on the street you always walk past.

Those tiny first moments turn into movements.

* I was my own boss, but really this work was more for the benefit of others than the job someone else paid me to do
